The problem with the fire extinguishers, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice, is "The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency". It includes extinguishers that had been previously recalled as well.

If you have a fire extinguisher in your home, you need to check it.

"In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard", Kidde said in a press release.

The recalled units were sold at Menards, Montgomery Ward, Sears, The Home Depot, Walmart and other department, home and hardware stores nationwide, and online at Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and other online retailers for between $12 and $50; one model sold for roughly $200.

The recall involves 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between 1973 and 2017. Kidde settled with the family.

McMullen says Kidde's huge market share makes the recall worrisome. Sixteen of those incidents resulted in injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation, the CPSC said.

A total of 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017. Or you can call the company at (855) 271-0773.

Customers can contact Kidde for a free replacement and instructions on how to return recalled models. The new extinguishers contain metal parts instead of plastic. Units manufactured prior to 2007 do not have a date code printed on the fire extinguisher.

Ann Marie Buerkle, acting chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, told CNN the agency is using print and radio ads and social media to spread the word about the recall.
