Is your fire extinguisher faulty? More than 40 million recalled following death

The faulty extinguishers are equipped with plastic handles and push-buttons and can become clogged.

Consumers are being asked to check the model number, serial number and date code printed on the fire extinguisher label. "In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard", the announcement said.

There have been 391 reports of the extinguishers failing, resulting in at least one death in 2014 that involved a auto fire following a crash, as well as 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns.

The recall covers 134 models of push-button and plastic-handle extinguishers made from 1973 through August 15 of this year.

Extinguishers have been sold at several stores including The Home Deport, Walmart and Amazon.


Kidde is recalling more than 40 million fire extinguishers made in the United States and Canada in the last 45 years because they might not work properly during an emergency, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said. At least 391 incidents of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment have been reported.

The extinguishers were sold in white, silver and red and are either ABC- or BC-rated.

The CPSC's recall includes 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers, including models previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015. They were also sold for use in commercial trucks, recreational vehicles and boats.

The company says consumers can contact Kidde to request a free replacement. To see if your fire extinguisher is on the recall list, visit the CPSC here.
