College Football Playoff officials have awarded the 2023 national championship game to the $2.6-billion stadium that Rams owner Stan Kroenke is building in Inglewood. Los Angeles' bid was led by the Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission (LASEC). Texas-based College Football Playoff is the organization that runs the game, which pits the winners of two semi-final bowl games head-to-head on a Monday night, nationally-televised match-up.
Each will be first-time hosts for the CFP championship game and represents a trend of moving the lucrative title game to different sites.
Since the renovation of Hard Rock Stadium, the Dolphins home since 1987, the stadium has been selected as the site of the NFL's annual premier event (Super Bowl LIV in February 2020) and, now, college football's annual premier event. No city has hosted the championship game a few times.
Indianapolis is no stranger to hosting marquee events.
The victor of the college football championship will once again be crowned in South Florida. The stadium also hosted the matchup of Clemson and Oklahoma in the national semifinals in 2015.
Other cities to host the title game will be Indianapolis in 2022, greater Los Angeles in 2023 and Houston in 2024.
"Indianapolis offers a welcoming atmosphere that is second to none", said Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff. The bidding processes likely will return once the 10 in 10 cycle finishes.
This season's championship game will be held in Atlanta at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which landed the championship game even before it was built - as the stadium in Inglewood has done. "This was truly a team effort, and we could not have secured this bid without the support of Harris County, the City of Houston, NRG Stadium and Houston First".
