Pedestrian falls onto I-66, driver dies

According to Virginia State Police, the incident happened around 4:20 p.m. Saturday on I-66.

The Daily Mail quoted the police saying that the boy landed on a Ford Escape and the impact incapacitated the vehicle's driver, Marisa Harris, 22, who died on the spot. A 23-year-old male passenger who was traveling with Harris managed to grab the steering wheel and direct the vehicle off of the interstate.

Police are not naming the jumper as he is under age, but he was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital and is being treated for life-threatening injuries.


Marisa, of Olney, Maryland, who was studying clinical counselling at Marymount University in Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene, while her boyfriend was unharmed. She'd recently returned from a trip to Budapest as part of a college course.

Police are investigating the matter as a suicide attempt, WUSA-TV reported. The front-seat passenger wasn't hurt. Marisa was a caring, giving person who meant to devote her life to helping children in crisis. Her father, Patrick Harris, said that she was an outgoing person and had a fondness for the outdoors, particularly hiking.

According to the deceased woman's mother, Marisa had just finished her first semester as a grad student at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. She was fearless, she was absolutely fearless.
