Facebook To Make Political Ads More Transparent On Platform

  • Facebook, Google, Twitter execs to testify about Russian misinformation campaigns

Facebook Inc said on Monday that Russia-based operatives published about 80,000 posts on the social network over a two-year period in an effort to sway USA politics and that about 126 million Americans may have seen the posts during that time.

Twitter has suspended all 2,752 accounts that it tracked to Russia's Internet Research Agency, and it has given USA congressional investigators the account names, the source familiar with the company's written testimony said. Facebook has 213 million monthly active users in the United States.

On Friday, Facebook said that it would take steps to make advertising more transparent after it was revealed that Russian operatives bought ads to stoke racial tensions in a bid to influence voting patterns in the 2016 US presidential election.

Facebook first informed lawmakers in September that it had identified 470 accounts linked to the Internet Research Agency, and that those accounts spent approximately $100,000 on more than 3,000 ads between June 2015 and August 2017.

Extend, in his readied declaration, looks to play down the noteworthiness of that level of introduction to content from Russian-supported records.

Facebook's general counsel, Colin Stretch, said in the written testimony that the 80,000 posts from Russia's Internet Research Agency were a tiny fraction of content on Facebook, equal to one out of 23,000 posts. "Put another way, if each of these posts were a commercial on television, you'd have to watch more than 600 hours of television to see something from the IRA".

"Don't tell me they found all the ads", he said.

Facebook has said the Russian-sponsored substances damaged the organization's approaches in light of the fact that, Stretch says in his readied declaration, they "originated from an arrangement of facilitated, inauthentic records". That's equivalent to about 40 percent of the USA population.

Extend says that gathering, APT28, additionally made "phony personas that were then used to seed stolen data to writers" and that those were "sorted out under the pennant of an association that called itself DC Leaks" whose records Facebook later expelled.
