  • Cannabis Legalization Hasn't Resulted In Any Major Problems For Colorado Officials

64% of Americans support legalizing marijuana for both recreational and medicinal use, the highest support since Gallup first asked the question in 1969.

Cannabis legalization support continues to rise in the United States, as a new Gallup poll finds that 64% of adults believe that cannabis prohibition should end.

For the first time, Gallup also found that a majority of Republicans have joined the majority of Democrats and independents in supporting legalization. Public support for marijuana legalization remained stagnant for decades until reaching 34 percent in 2001 and has steadily grown each successive year.

Seventy-two percent of Democrats told pollsters this month they support legalizing marijuana, up from 67 percent in 2016, according to the results published Wednesday.

"It makes sense that support for ending marijuana prohibition is increasing", said Morgan Fox, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project. "We urge the Department of Justice in particular to continue its policy of not interfering in states with well-regulated adult-use and medical marijuana programs while lawmakers catch up to the will of the people". A majority of Democrats supported it for the first time in 2009, a figure that rose to 72 percent this year. Eight states and the District of Columbia have fully legalized marijuana, meaning more than one in five Americans now live in a state where the drug is legal. Many other states allow marijuana use for medicinal purposes under laws with varying degrees of strictness.

The biggest news in this survey is not that a majority of Americans want weed to be made legal - that's been true since at least 2013 - but that Republicans are finally coming around. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points. Sessions could have an uphill battle in shoring up support for his anti-marijuana crusade if he cannot even count on his own party.

Another poll, released earlier today by Sacred Heart University, found that 71% of CT residents support legalizing and taxing cannabis for adult use. "That bodes well for efforts to pass cannabis laws in more states in 2018 - both on the ballot and through state legislatures".
