The widow of a dead U.S. soldier says Donald Trump could not remember her husband's name when he phoned to offer condolences. Myeshia Johnson told ABC's "Good Morning America" in an interview that Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson was practically a member of their family and was among a group of people listening to Trump's call on a speaker phone as they drove to receive Sgt.

La David Johnson was among four who died October 4 in Niger when they were attacked by militants tied to the Islamic State.

President Donald Trump on Monday said he had a "very respectful" phone conversation with the widow of a recently fallen US soldier after the soldier's widow said he failed to remember her husband's name in the condolence call.

QUESTION: What do you say about her comment that he did not know - and the wife, the widow, said that the president did not know his name; he kept saying "your guy", "your guy"?

The row had escalated when Mr Trump suggested that former President Barack Obama had not called the family of his chief of staff, General John Kelly, when their son was killed in Afghanistan.

Trump called the condolence call a "respectful conversation", claiming that he used the soldier's name "without hesitation!" "Why couldn't I see my husband?"

Ms Wilson, who was by Mrs Johnson's side during the conversation, later said the billionaire "does not possess the character, empathy or grace to be President of the United States".

She said he then had her husband's name on a report in front of him. "And that's what hurt me the most, because if my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risked his life for our country", she said.

Would you like to have an apology from John Kelly? "I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it".

The conflict continued Tuesday with Wilson criticizing the condolence call to Johnson. "I don't know what's in that box", she said.

Mr Trump said he had "proof" that Ms Wilson's account was inaccurate, but has yet to provide it.

"Whatever Miss Wilson said was not fabricated". She was principal of a school Johnson's father attended.

"Why would we fabricate something like that?" she later added. "I don't know anything". Wilson meanwhile urged Trump to learn Myeshia's name, and instead of doubling down on rhetoric via the Twitter war of words, the president should offer words of comfort and kindness and compassion. She wants to see his body to confirm it's him, but the military has not allowed that, she said.
