  • EAM Sushma Swaraj on a 2-day visit to Bangladesh

This will be her second visit.

"On behalf of the BNP, several issues related to our politics and elections scheduled for next year were highlighted during the meeting", Alamgir said.

"India is deeply concerned at the spate of violence in Rakhine state of Myanmar", federal External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said in a joint address to the media along with her Bangladeshi counterpart Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali following the fourth India-Bangladesh Joint Consultative Committee meeting.

Ali said Dhaka was "happy to be reassured that India would continue to support the humanitarian cause related to Rohingyas in Bangladesh".

The pending Teesta water sharing issue has also been discussed as what the Bangladesh foreign minister said they recalled the statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April during Sheikh Hasina's visit to India that the Teesta agreement will be signed during the current tenure of the two prime ministers.

The programme has been confirmed by the Bangladesh foreign ministry.

But it comes at a time when the decades-old Rohingya refugee crisis took a new turn, with more than half a million of the Myanmar nationals entering Bangladesh since Aug 25 after fleeing ethnic cleansing in Rakhine state.

Ties between India and Bangladesh have warmed considerably since New Delhi ratified and signed a land boundary agreement with Dhaka in 2015 that had been languishing since 1974.

Bangladesh has sought India's "sustained pressures" on Myanmar for its resolution.

This is Swaraj's second visit to Bangladesh and comes after the recent trip of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley during which India operationalised a Dollars 4.5 billion line of credit to Bangladesh to enable implementation of development projects in key areas, including power, railways, roads and shipping.

India has extended three lines of credit amounting to United States dollars 8 billion to Bangladesh so far. 65-year-old Swaraj was greeted by Bangladesh Foreign Minister and High Commissioner of India Harsh Shringla on her arrival in Dhaka earlier today.

"We are confident that this credit will be invaluable to Bangladesh as it pursues its developmental priorities, especially in the areas of infrastructure development", Swaraj said.
