Donald Trump Personally Offers $25000 to a Grieving Military Father

  • A grieving military father says Trump offered him $25000 after his son was killed and didn't follow through

Except, as Baldridge told the Post, Trump never sent him a check for $25,000, and the administration never set up an online fundraiser as promised. Dillon Baldridge, was killed in June during a suspected insider attack by an Afghan police officer.

But Sergeant Johnson's mother, Cowanda Jones-Johnson, told The Washington Post she was present during Mr Trump's call and supported the congresswoman's account of Mr Trump's comment.

"He said, "I'm going to write you a cheque out of my personal account for $25,000", and I was just floored", Mr Baldridge said.

"I wish I had it recorded because the man did say this".

Trump called Myeshia Johnson on Tuesday and, according to Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson, the President said that the serviceman killed "knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurt".

Wednesday afternoon ― after the Post story had appeared on the newspaper's website ― White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said the check was in the mail.

"It's disgusting that the media is taking something that should be recognized as a generous and honest gesture, made privately by the president, and using it to advance the media's biased agenda", Walters said. La David Johnson, who was killed with three other US soldiers in Niger last month-veteran's groups are among the many voices saying they are appalled by Trump's behavior in recent days.

He boasts: "I think I've called every family of someone who's died".

A White House spokesperson, speaking on background, said the check has been "in the pipeline" since the President's conversation with the father. "I did not say what she said".

But Mr Baldridge was left disappointed after later receiving a letter of condolence and no cheque, as promised.

Trump's 5-minute call came as Johnson was on her way to Miami International Airport - just before her husband's body arrived from overseas, said Wilson, who was accompanying the family.

Reagan also apparently sent a $50 check in 1986 to an 11-year-old girl who'd written the White House saying she wanted to help the homeless. "I'd rather have him back than any dollar amount", he said.

In his call with Trump, Baldridge, a construction worker, expressed frustration with the military's survivor benefits program. La David Johnson, who was killed earlier this month in Niger.

Amid the new revelations-coupled with the uproar of Trump's widely criticized handling of his phone call with the widow of Army Sgt.

Asked by reporters about an earlier tweet saying he had "proof" of what he said, Mr Trump said: "Let her [Wilson] make her statement again and you'll find out". "All of the individuals that the president has been presented with through the proper protocol have been contacted through that process".
