Nikola Mirotic was aggressor in Bobby Portis altercation

  • Nikola Mirotic

Chicago Bulls forward Bobby Portis has a call setup with the National Basketball Association on Wednesday to discuss the altercation he got into with forward Nikola Mirotic on Tuesday, and he's expected to face a multi-game suspension. And that punch connected and for us that is inexcusable. The Vertical's Shams Charania reported Mirotic was hospitalized in the aftermath after an "alleged surprise punch from Portis" to his face. But in this case, he made a mistake. We all know when you make mistakes, we got to suffer the consequences. Mirotic has to wait until concussion symptoms subside before doctors can perform any surgery, so the four-to-six-week timetable could change. We did get counsel and advice from the league because this is really unprecedented in a practice situation.

"There's altercations a lot of times, but the result of Niko's injuries are why we've taken the position that we have". A restricted free agent, he signed a two-year contract that could pay as much as $27 million in September.

Portis will be eligible to return for the Bulls' ninth game of the season against the Raptors on November 7.

He averaged 7.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as a rookie and followed up with 6.8 points and 4.6 boards a night in 2016-17.

Mirotic averaged 10.8 points over his first three seasons with Chicago.

According to multiple Bulls players, and a fact that that Paxson acknowledged himself, the Portis-Mirotic conflict has been brewing for a few seasons, as the two forwards had a handful of shouting and shoving matches in practice going back to the 2015-16 campaign.
