The footballing world has been rocked by the news of Indonesian goal-keeper Choirul Huda passing away after a mid-game collision.

Medical staff rushed to his aid and quickly escorted him from the field on a stretcher and to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Persela coach Aji Santoso confirmed after the game finished that Huda had died from his injuries.

The 38-year-old Persela custodian had rushed out of his goal to foil an attack by an opposition player but couldn't avoid oncoming defender Ramon Rodrigues towards the end of the first half match against Semen Padang at Surajaya Stadium.

"Through our analysis, it was due to collision in the head and neck", added Mubarok. "We did not have time to a see a doctor, only to see his body".

Huda was a club legend who had made more than 500 appearances for Persela Lamongan dating all the way back to 1999.

A statement from a doctor at the Dr Soegiri Lamongan Hospital, which was posted on the official Persela website, said Huda had suffered a "traumatic collision" which stopped his breathing and led to cardiac arrest. "Thank you for the inspiration you gave to Persela, Lamongan and Indonesian football".
