"We wanted to make a stand against racism", Hertha captain Per Skjelbred said after their 2-0 loss to Schalke.

"Hertha BSC stands for tolerance and responsibility", said a tweet posted on the official Hertha Berlin account.

On Saturday, members of the German #Soccer Club #Hertha Berlin knelt down at Berlin's Olympiastadion in the beginning of Bundesliga home game, the New York Times reported.

"For this reason, we are joining forces with the protest of our fellow American athletes to take a stand against discrimination".

Their kneeling demonstrated a public support of the NFL (National Football League) sportsmen, who have been kneeling down to show their protest against the policy of the current U.S. government, racial inequality, discrimination, and social injustice in the US.

"If we can give some lessons there with that, then that's good", Kalou said.

The Bundesliga club copied the protests, started by San Francisco 49ers National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick, against the treatment of black Americans. "There are some people, however, who are not that far ideologically yet", Hertha defender Sebastian Langkamp told Sky TV at halftime.

It should be noted that the Bundesliga, like many European soccer leagues, do not regularly play their national anthem and it wasn't played today.

President Donald Trump has also weighed in on the debate, saying that clubs should fire players who protest the anthem.

"We stand against racists and that's our way of sharing that".
