Klopp questions United tactics while Mourinho rues stalemate

It is a record which leaves Liverpool top of the top-six mini-league during Klopp's tenure, although he is yet to record a Premier League victory over United - perhaps due largely to United's style of play being most closely aligned with a "smaller" club than any other from that "big six". "Obviously for United it is ok".

Germany global Can is aware of the significance of a clash with rivals Manchester United and is looking forward to what he hopes will be a "special" day. "I left that stadium so happy, I left that stadium so sad", he said.

Last season's 0-0 draw at Anfield, as desperately tiresome as it was, carried a different meaning for United because back then, Mourinho had just begun to impose his blueprint on the club and stopping Liverpool scoring at that point was an achievement in itself.

They peppered United, who had 38% possession, with 20 shots but have won just once in eight matches in all competitions and have drawn the last three.

"It's quite hard when a top-class team like United has that defensive approach", said the German. It was not the celebration Klopp would have wanted on the second anniversary of his appointment as Liverpool manager and he now has only one more point than his predecessor Brendan Rodgers had at the moment he was sacked.

"We came for three (points). The second half was a bit of chess, but my opponent didn't open the door for me to win the game". "But we had enough, a big one in the first half, and a penalty I feel, we were unlucky".

United look like a different beast this season, though, and with Liverpool winless at home since August the visitors may be tempted to attack more than they have on recent visits - something which could play into the hosts' hands.

The Spain global brilliantly kept out Joel Matip's close-range effort with his foot in the first half to ensure that Jose Mourinho's side left Anfield with a point.

"I had [Ander] Herrera and [Nemanja] Matic and no one on the bench to make a difference".

"And I have no midfielder to do what I do many, many times, which is to be with three strong midfielders and then give more freedom to all three attacking players". "That midfield was stronger than my midfield". I drew matches where I was happy, I drew matches where I was not happy.

The defence has been a long-standing issue which, by his own admission, Klopp is losing patience with, but the growing concern for Liverpool prior to the global break was their wastefulness in front of goal.

If Mourinho is to guide United to their first league title since 2012-13, does he now need to evolve his gameplan for the biggest games and set out his team to be more ambitious?

"Jurgen Klopp made changes but he still kept the three-man midfield the same", he said on Sky Sports (via the Echo).

The change never came.

"You'll say we were defensive and they were offensive".

However, United are yet to play against any real title contenders and will be eager to put on a display against bitter rivals Liverpool.
