  • Oculus Go: The $200 Standalone Headset VR Needs

Dependence between technology providers and steep price points has meant that VR is yet to take off. Facebook, which owns VR maker Oculus, is now finally addressing these two obstacles with the new Oculus Go headset.

That accessibility is where Oculus Go comes in. Introducing the Oculus Go: a standalone VR headset that won't cost you an arm and a leg. The Oculus Go will allow you to spin around while in virtual reality but not move around freely. They can target both Gear VR and Oculus Go at the same time, and Facebook confirms Oculus Go will be binary-compatible with Gear VR content. You also don't need a phone, like you do with the Samsung Gear VR.

Mr Zuckerberg called it "the most accessible VR experience ever".

Will Mark Zuckerberg reach his ambitious goal of getting "1 billion people in virtual reality"? But the Go is not just a less expensive version of the Rift.

ARKTIKA.1's current price is $29.99 United States dollars (or your regional equivalent) and is available now for the Oculus Rift.

The real kicker in the Go is it will act as a standalone unit. Hugo Barra, Facebook's VP of VR, said that it's "hands-down the easiest way for developers to get involved with VR".

It may turn out that Oculus Go supports some or all of Rift's full-bodied apps, but, right now, all it's confirmed to run are mobile VR experiences.

The old Oculus Home interface isn't going away, but it's changing. The device features same lenses as on the Rift and is bundled with a small controller that is similar to one available for Gear VR.

But, without having tried Go as it isn't on display at Connect, the new headset does have the feeling of a stopgap measure, and a late one at that. The device will ship to consumers in 2018 while the developer kit will be available starting next month. The new headset was shown off with updated controllers, fittingly dubbed the Santa Cruz controllers. He and Facebook's head of social virtual reality, Rachel Franklin, appeared as avatars within the broadcast from his profile as they "teleported" to different locations using Facebook's "social VR" tool Spaces.
