McGowan didn't just unleash her thoughts on Weinstein, but also on several Hollywood figures who have since come out to denounce the former movie producer.
Twitter users lashed out in her defense, accusing the company of not equally enforcing the rules against those who use hate speech.
Minutes after model Chrissy Teigen tweeted her support for the boycott she shared examples of the abuse she had received online in response, some of it sexually explicit. Her account has now been restored, and she is back, fiercer than ever.
Her Twitter account, where she has been the most active and outspoken, was temporarily suspended this week, and while Twitter says it was because one of her tweets violated the site's terms by including a private phone number, McGowan has suggested that it has to do with her calling out Weinstein.
Today, some women are forsaking Twitter in protest of the McGowan suspension; before signing off, they've used the hashtag #WomenBoycottTwitter. "They need to see we matter...."
McGowan's account was suspended Wednesday amidst a tweetstorm against the "Gigli" actor, who she said was well aware of Weinstein's pervy predilections. "I said I was proof", she claimed.
Following the controversy, Twitter explained the reason for suspending the actress' account.
Uploading a screenshot with a message from Twitter stating she can not send tweets or retweets from her account, unless she deletes "tweets that violate our rules", McGowan captioned the image: "TWITTER HAS SUSPENDED ME".
"I forcefully begged studio head to do the right thing", McGowan tweeted. The company added that it is now in touch with McGowan. "We will be clearer about these policies and decisions in the future", the tweeted statement read.
The company's official account also tweeted: "We stand with the courageous women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices".
