As of 5 a.m. EDT, Ophelia, which isn't now a threat to any land, was centered about 785 miles (1,265 kilometers) southwest of the Azores and moving southeast near 6 mph (9 kph).

Right now, Ophelia is moving east at about 3 miles per hour and is expected to gradually turn northeast by Thursday night.

Ophelia continues to spin in the open Atlantic Ocean, posing no threat to the United States or any other part of North America. The National Hurricane Center predicts the storm to maintain hurricane strength for the next few days and could even gain a little strength. But the storm seems to be heading east towards the coast of Spain instead of crossing the Atlantic towards the hurricane-ravaged Caribbean.

Tropical Storm Ophelia looked like a hurricane but wasn't one quite yet, the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday morning. This has not happened in 124 years, or since 1893. Ophelia will then run into an approaching deep-layer trough that will make the hurricane accelerate toward the northeast.

The current forecast has Ophelia becoming subtropical before it reaches the Iberian Peninsula.

This season has already been above average in all three categories, named storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes. That's a bit of an unusual track for Atlantic storms.

Tropical Storm Ophelia is moving southeastward in the Atlantic and is expected to become a hurricane overnight or on Thursday.

Center officials said the hurricane is forecast to drift northeastward over the next 24 hours.
