  • Speaker of the House Paul Ryan R-Wis. joined at left by House Majority Whip Steve Scalise R-La. offers his advice in the escalating feud between President Donald Trump and Republican Sen. Bob Corker

"So have at it", Corker told Martin. "Hence, I would fully expect Corker to be a negative voice and stand in the way of our great agenda".

On Tuesday, Trump took to Twitter to lambaste "Liddle Bob Corker", after the Tennessee Republican said he anxious that Trump's belligerent foreign policy rhetoric could ignite "World War III".

May the blunt words by onetime Trump ally Bob Corker inspire any number of his fellow Republicans to show more backbone on a daily basis, and to start laying the foundation to challenge the president in the 2020 GOP primaries.

According to New York Times reporter Jonathan Martin, who interviewed Corker, the senator had two congressional aides on the phone call with him who were also recording the conversation.

Todd Womack, Corker's chief of staff, denied the claim later in the day.

Now what? James Fallows at the Atlantic writes that if Corker truly believes Trump might blunder his way into World War III, he has an obligation to "do something about it" by providing a crucial check on Trump's actions through his position as chair of the Foreign Relations Committee.

Corker replied, "It's a shame the White House has become an adult day care center". Trump has yet to score a signature legislative victory, a black mark on his record given his party controls both the Senate and House. One of the Senate's most committed deficit hawks and outspoken members on budgetary issues, Corker already has expressed concerns with the Trump administration's proposal on tax cuts, and his vote will be key to any deal getting done.

"I don't think so".

"I think we're well on our way, ' Trump said of Republican efforts to craft the bill". He added, "I know [Trump] has hurt, in several instances, he's hurt us as it relates to negotiations that were underway by tweeting things out".

Known for his blunt commentary, Corker had long softened any public criticism of Trump or his administration with carefully worded praise. Steve Bannon, Trump's former chief strategist who was let go from the White House earlier this year, called on the senator to resign in response.
