Microsoft sounds the death knell for Windows Phone

Also, technically speaking, it isn't completely dead but current users can forget about any new features or functionalities coming to the OS. And now, in a recent array of tweets, Joe Belfiore, the man behind Windows Mobile has confirmed that they have failed to generate any interest from both consumers and developers to keep the platform alive.

The company had launched its mobile operating system in 2000 and a Windows CE software for personal digital assistants, known as PDAs, in 1996. In a series of tweets, Belfiore detailed how the operating system would enter servicing mode - that means bug fixes and security updates, but no new features.

Having said that, Belfiore did reassure current users that even though Microsoft won't be focusing on this platform any more, the company will "continue to support the platform" by rolling out bug fixes and security patches. Even Belfiore admits he switched to Android for the app and hardware diversity.

"We have tried VERY HARD to incentivize app developers", said Belfiore.

Windows Mobile users have endlessly complained about the shortage of apps on the phone which urges them to look for other better options. It created the Windows CE that went in PDAs way back in 1996 and launched Windows Phone in 2000. PhoneArena has learned that during the 9-month leave of absence of the executive, he opted to use Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S7 as his daily drivers.

Critics have claimed that the apps available on Windows phones pale in comparison to their iOS and Android counterparts.

The shocking revelation has come from no one but Joe Belfore, Vice President of Windows Experience, Microsoft Corporation. However, the company has never officially admitted the same.

The Verge also noted that a foreshadowing was evident during the Build and Inspire conferences. This suggests the tech giant will now focus on multi-device scenarios and intelligent cloud solutions. It seems increasingly likely that Windows 10 Mobile is simply going through the motions until its scheduled retirement next October.
