Trump's remarks in Puerto Rico dwell on 'real catastrophe' of Katrina

  • National Guard personnel clean up roads in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria

Later, Mr Trump surveyed the damage from the air before landing on the USS Kearsarge to greet servicemen.

He said: "I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you are throwing our budget out of whack".

He was insulting to the people of Puerto Rico...he kind of minimized our suffering, saying that Katrina was a real disaster, sort of implying that this was not a real disaster, because not that many people have died here.

As we all know, President Trump and San Juan's Mayor, Carmen Yulin Cruz, simply don't get along.

Donald Trump may have described his Puerto Rico visit as great, but the ground reality presents a different picture.

Trump and Cruz have been disparaging each other through the press and social media for almost a week as criticism poured in over Trump's response to the Hurricane Maria damage in Puerto Rico. "You're looking at people that are devastated, that can't find water, can't find food and you're throwing the basic needs at them", Haines added.

Trump continued: 'We've spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico and that's fine, we've saved a lot of lives.

Even as military and civilians work to hand out one million meals and two million gallons of water, 90 percent of residents are still without power or phone service. "And we're going to have to wipe that out", he said. "Well you know what, they're dying". We will help Puerto Rico rebuild from the storm.

She ended the interview with this zinger: "What is truly nasty is that anyone would turn their back on the Puerto Rican people". Speaking with reporters in San Juan, Trump said that "it's been unbelievable what's been done in a very short period of time on Puerto Rico".

Cruz has been vocal in her criticism of Trump, praising White House officials, but criticizing the president for the administration's overall response.

Cruz, who exchanged a war of words with Trump over the weekend about the federal response to help the island recover, called Trump the "miscommunicator-in-chief" when she spoke to MSNBC on Tuesday.

Upon arriving in San Juan, the president talked a little about his previous visits to Puerto Rico and how the island had just the best weather -save for the hurricanes. And in fact, this awful and abominable view of him throwing paper towels and throwing provisions at people, it does not embody the spirit of the American nation.
