  • Bangladesh to move ahead despite Rohingya influx: PM

Bangladesh will build a single, enormous refugee camp to house around 800,000 Rohingya refugees as a Bangladeshi minister warned his country was struggling to deal with the flood across the border.

"This flow out of Myanmar has not stopped yet, it's into the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya (who are) still in Myanmar, we want to be ready in case there is a further exodus", said the UN's under secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, Mark Lowcock, in a Friday press briefing in Geneva.

Rohingya Muslim refugees exhausted by their journey rest upon arrival on the Bangladeshi shoreline of the Naf river after crossing the border from Myanmar in Teknaf on September 30. "The two sides have agreed to a proposal to set up a joint working group to coordinate the repatriation process".

Observers believe that as many as 100,000 more people may be waiting to cross to the southeast Bangladeshi port of Cox's Bazar from Myanmar's Rakhine state, the International Organisation for Migration said, citing staff members monitoring the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

"The Rohingya fled to Bangladesh without any legal documents and it is hard to prove their identity", he told AFP. This time Bangladeshi government, while extending them hospitality has been strict and ordered restrictions including no sim cards, and confining the whole refugee population to one camp in Kutpalong.

Haque's position runs contrary to New Delhi's stance that Rohingya refugees in India pose a national security threat amid fears of radicalisation.

"Not that it always becomes (a security threat), depends on how you manage it".

The Bangladesh Foreign Secretary said there is a tendency to view such issues from the prism of radicalisation, but that obfuscates the fact that it is above all a humanitarian issue, involving women and children who "need support".

Bangladesh, with no option but to host the sheer number of people forced out of their homes, had not taken in too kindly to how Indian government was trying to skirt the issue, even as it kept calling for deportation of Rohingyas in India.

Addressing a joint press event, Tusk said the two sides wanted de-escalation of tensions and full adherence to worldwide obligations in Myanmar and access of people to humanitarian aid.

Myanmar's military have blamed the unrest on the Rohingya.

India had also called for implementation of the Kofi Annan Commission recommendations as a solution to the crisis.
