  • The chancellor hands Theresa May a sweet as she struggles to contain a cough

Environment secretary Michael Gove, touring radio studios to promote a ban on ivory sales created to stop the extinction of endangered species, insisted the prime minister was not facing extinction.

Charles Walker, the vice-chairman of the influential Tory backbench 1922 Committee, also came out strongly against the Shapps-led coup attempt.

She posted: "Since road trip turmoil under his party chairmanship Grant Shapps lacks a base in the party". "It doesn't reflect well on them and it doesn't reflect well on Grant Shapps".

Mr Shapps would not be drawn on the number but did confirm that he had the support of five former Cabinet ministers.

Mr Jones said: "Theresa May is the right person to lead the United Kingdom". We've not really managed to see that relaunch.

"I think a growing number of my colleagues realise the solution isn't to bury our heads in the sand and hope things will get better". "Before the Tory party conference I think people thought she might continue until after the Brexit negotiations were completed and go in 2019". Instead, she delivered a speech that made headlines but for the wrong reasons.

The rest of May's speech was marred by coughing fit, which forced her to accept a cough lozenge from her finance minister and to take many gulps of water. "And they must be our focus", she will say, according to extracts released by her office.

Turning to Britain's departure from the European Union (EU), May acknowledged that EU citizens in Britain were nervous, saying: "I have a message for them - you are most welcome here".

Although May's closest ministers in her governing cabinet have pledged their support for her, Shapps claimed some of her cabinet ministers privately agreed with his call.

Comedian Simon Brodkin managed to get on camera at the front of the stage and hand the prime minister the termination of employment tax form, and said "Boris asked me to give you this", before being ejected from the hall. One senior lawmaker who believes May is deeply wounded said she would survive this crisis but the next one would end her leadership. What we're doing is concentrating on delivering and governing effectively.

But following the speech, Mr Johnson tweeted: "Great job by the PM today putting housing at the heart of renewing the British dream".

A spokesman for the Prime Minister confirmed there will be a "thorough investigation into what's happened [with regards to security], and that despite the clear issues with her delivery, the Prime Minister is in good health and was pleased with the way the speech went".
