'Not only to leave behind footprints and flags, but to build the foundations we need to send Americans to Mars and beyond'. But the cancellation of the manned program meant NASA would need global assistance to go to Mars, angering former astronauts, who issued a statement denouncing the "devastating" plan that "destines our nation to become one of second- or even third-rate stature". "American companies are on the cutting edge of space technology, and they're developing new rockets, spaceships, and satellites that will take us further into space faster than ever before", Pence said.

The United States hasn't sent an American astronaut beyond low-Earth orbit in 45 years, he said.

"America must lead in space once again". The first, "on the Moon", is fairly obvious.

"Today, in the shadow of this history, we pledge to do what America has always done: We will push the boundaries of human knowledge", he said.

Pence asked if the US should "weaponize" space.

Above all, Pence stressed that the U.S. would lead in space again under the Trump administration.

After months of hinting, Vice President Mike Pence finally made it clear today that the Trump administration will direct NASA to land humans on the Moon and establish a more permanent presence on the lunar surface.

At its first meeting in a quarter-century Thursday, the recently-resurrected National Space Council met with Vice President Mike Pence to discuss the USA space agenda's aim to send astronauts "to Mars and beyond". He mentions an advisory group composed of commercial space leaders and says, "business is leading the way on space technology, and we intend to draw from the bottomless well of innovation to solve the challenges ahead".

"The intelligence community reports that Russian Federation and China are pursuing a full range of anti-satellite technology created to threaten our military's effectiveness".

The primacy of these stated goals was reflected in the makeup of the panelists at today's meeting, which was held at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.

"We have proven that USA ventures in space lead to broad societal benefits that lift our national economy", said Hewson.

The council will hear testimonial from expert witnesses who represent the sectors of the space industry: Civil Space, Commercial Space, and National Security Space.
