  • Jaish-e-Mohammad fidayeen storm BSF camp near Srinagar Airport; 2 attackers killed

The officer told TOI that it appears that the JeM terrorists had conducted a survey of the airport to attack it but since they couldn't find a way to breach the security of the airport, they made a decision to attack the camp. At least 180 militants (up from 24 the previous year) have also been killed in the Valley during the period. By then, the terrorists had killed BSF Assistant Sub-Inspector B.S. Yadav.

Officers said that at the SO mess, five BSF officers were present at the time of the attack and they were evacuated. Security forces in large numbers sealed off the Humhama area and the road leading to the airport and launched an operation against the terrorists.

The elite National Security Guards (NSG) were put on standby to rush to Srinagar minutes after the terror attack on the Border Security Force (BSF) battalion campus on Tuesday but the Jammu and Kashmir government declined the Centre's offer.

Suspected militants entered the 182 battalion of the BSF camp near the Srinagar Airport outside the Air Force station at Gogo Humhama around 4.30 am. However, in order to avoid the increasing inconvenience, passengers are being let in at Srinagar Airport after thorough checking.

Tuesday's attack came hours before an Indian soldier was killed by Pakistani fire on the de facto Kashmiri border in the mountainous Poonch district southwest of Srinagar.

The base in which the gun battle took place shares a common compound wall with the airport.

A caller identifying himself as spokesman of the outfit told local news gathering agencies that Jaish militants carried out the attack.

In August, militants attacked a police base in the southern Kashmir town of Pulwama, killing eight security personnel.

However, during first contact, BSF troops eliminated one terrorist forcing the remaining forces to move towards two different buildings, including an empty administrative building. Sources in BSF told Mirror that the terrorists have positioned themselves inside barracks of the BSF and there was heavy exchange of gunfire between the two sides.
