Monty Hall, the iconic host and co-creator of "Let's Make a Deal" has died, according to the New York Times.

One of America's most popular presenters, his son said he suffered heart failure on Saturday morning at his home in Beverly Hills. When a People magazine interviewer suggested in 1996 that "Let's Make a Deal" would be his epitaph, Hall replied, with a wince: "You put that on my tombstone, and I'll kill you".

Later on, he began hosting for network game shows such as "Split Second", "Masquerade Party" and "Beat the Clock".

Hall hosted the show for nearly all of its 5,000 episodes that aired on NBC & ABC.

His big break came with "Let's Make a Deal".

In the early 1960s, he was developing game shows and joined forces with TV veteran Stefan Hatos. He later hosted game shows on WABD-TV and eventually moved to NY City to work on CBS and NBC.

Wherever and whenever the game show aired, its concept was a constant: Players, known as "traders", were given a moderate prize and offered the opportunity to trade it for an unknown prize.

Hall was also known for doing lots of charity work in his private life.

A daughter, Joanna Gleason, confirmed his death.

Born in Manitoba, Canada, Hall obtained a chemistry degree from the University of Manitoba.

Hall was named to the order of Canada in 1988, and in 2013 he won a lifetime achievement award at the Daytime Emmys. But bitten by the stage bug thanks to appearances in student shows, he left for NY. He hosted several, over the course of his career, but Let's Make a Deal is what injected him into the cultural ether.

In 1947, Hall married his wife, Marilyn, who became an Emmy Award-winning producer.
