  • Man 'ploughs car into pedestrians' before stabbing officer

A man struck an Edmonton police officer with a auto and stabbed him, and four pedestrians later were hit by a truck driving on a street.

"We believe the individual acted alone", Edmonton Police Service Chief Rod Knecht said on Sunday.

The auto struck a police officer standing in front of his patrol vehicle, "sending him flying 3m through the air".

Police confirm that a black and white flag for the terrorist group was found in a Chevy Malibu used to slam through police barricade outside the Commonwealth Stadium around 8 p.m.in Edmonton.

Canadian Police say they are investigating possible acts of terrorism after multiple incidents in the capital city of Alberta province, reported the BBC.

Police identified the suspect when he got stopped at a checkpoint and his license showed that he was the owner of the Malibu.

The U-Haul truck eventually flipped on a main road in Edmonton, and the driver was apprehended.

The police officer appears to wrestle with the driver on the ground and, at one point, it appears the officer is on top of the driver. Knecht said the man was known to police, but did not release his name.

The van then sped off with the police in pursuit.

He said the truck "deliberately attempted to hit pedestrians" during the police chase.

EPS is working with the RCMP Integrated National Security Enforcement Team on this investigation. The U-Haul driver fled from the scene, with more than 20 police vehicles pursuing him. His injuries are not critical, Knecht said. One suspect who was driving the U-Haul is under arrest.

While being chased, the suspect tried to hit pedestrians as he passed by crosswalks and alleyways, Knetch said. "I'm shocked - I just see people flying".

After that, Elgie said he still had a bar to run that was full of people.

Knecht addressed those concerns at his news conference, saying the seriousness of the crime dictated why the chase continued. "The investigation is in its very early stages and we are urging Edmontonians to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings".

A heavy police presence had blanketed Edmonton's inner city after the initial incident as the manhunt ramped up.

Over 30,000 people were at the stadium Saturday night to watch the Eskimos take on the Blue bombers when the suspect launched the attack on 107 A Avenue and 92nd St, southwest of the stadium.
