  • The NFL Protests Are About Racism. Don't Let Trump Distract You

A group of mothers of NFL players have sent an open letter to President Trump asking him to put an end to his "divisive language", while defending the players who have protested during the national anthem in response to his comments. "And they've got to be tough and they've got to be smart". I remember when it was said that the Dallas Cowboys is "America's Team".

In an interview with "Fox & Friends" that aired Thursday, Trump moved past his most common complaint of disrespect and cast peacefully protesting players as threats to their billionaire employers.

Frankly, in the case of the players' disrespect of the flag and what it stands for, those acts are turning people against them. They are exercising their First Amendment right, and if Trump is not in favor of white supremacy he would stand up for everyone's right to freedom of speech, not just white people's.

I understand that the players are trying to have a voice for the injustice in our country, but when you take a step back and realize how lucky we are to be living in the United States, standing up for the flag seems like a simple task to do. "Those statements are not accurate", the NFL's chief spokesman, Joe Lockhart, said in a conference call with reporters.

"When it comes to the respect of our nation, when it comes to the respect of our anthem and our flag - they have no choice", Trump added of National Football League owners.

The NFL does not have a rule that requires players to stand during the anthem.?Teams must be on the field 10 minutes before kickoff, though the NFL said there would be no discipline for teams that weren't on the field last weekend.

It's a comfortable way to seemingly appease the players who want to continue the protest for racial equality and social justice, started by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick last season, while also showing respect for the flag and the anthem.

Only one member of the Carolina Panthers, Julius Peppers, stayed in the locker room during the anthem. I mean, if you feel that's something, we're disrespecting you, don't come to the game.

Trump claims his obsession with these protests has nothing to do with race.

"I will say that this issue has been very much overtaken by political forces here, and one of the impacts of that is to distort the views of the NFL, the league, and particularly our players".

"The NFL has all sorts of rules and regulations", Trump tweeted out on September 26.

Most Americans, however, disapprove of Trump saying that protesting players should be fired, per Fluent data.
