Russian Federation warns of "catastrophic consequences" if Korean dispute descends into war

Choe Son-hui, director-general of the North American section of North Korea's foreign ministry, met with Russia's ambassador-at-large Oleg Burmistrov.

Russian Federation says it is ready to work with North Korea to try to find a peaceful resolution to the missile crisis on the Korean Peninsula.

Last month, North Korea's official news agency said the Australian Government should be focused on maintaining the peace of its own country, instead of joining the U.S. in moves towards nuclear war.

'We have not declared war against North Korea and frankly the suggestion of that is absurd, ' White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

The U.S. said it welcomed Moscow's efforts, even though the Russian-Chinese roadmap proposes an end to the U.S joint military exercises with South Korea in exchange for Pyongyang giving up on the nuclear development programme-a proposal the U.S. has already rejected.

North Korea, for its part, says it needs to develop its weapons to defend itself against what it sees as US aggression.

The Pentagon said the squadron's flypast was the farthest north of the Korean Demilitarized Zone that any USA fighter jet or bomber has flown in the 21st century.

In his address to the UN General Assembly on September 19, US President Donald Trump threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea if necessary.

Burmistrov, Russia's deputy nuclear negotiator, visited the DPRK in late July to discuss issues involving the Korean Peninsula, reports said.

Kim responded that Trump was "mentally deranged" and a "dotard" who would "pay dearly" for his threats. "It argues that crippling North Korea's economy is undesirable since it will lead to potential political instability and Russia's worst fear-regime change", she added. It remains to be seen whether this strategy will work or if Moscow or Beijing actually still have leverage over the North Korean junta.
