Mattis and NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg renewed their commitment to Afghanistan on Wednesday, as the Taliban launched a rocket attack that wounded five civilians in Kabul.

The strategy will also make greater use of USA air power to support Afghan forces and strike the Taliban, a strategy that carries the risk of an increase in civilian casualties.

Ministry of Interior spokesman Najib Danish confirmed the incident, saying the attack had not caused any casualties. The NATO mission in Afghanistan, Resolute Support, said "one of the missiles malfunctioned, causing several casualties".

"Resolute Support deeply regrets the harm to non-combatants". "An investigation into the attack and the malfunctioning ammunition has begun".

Both the Taliban and the Islamic State terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the attack.

"If in fact, this is what they have done, they will find the Afghan Security Forces continuing on the offensive against them in every district of the country right now", Mattis added.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation chief Jens Stoltenberg said "his organization does not want Afghanistan to become a safe haven for terrorists again and the organization's troops are here to make the country safer along with safeguarding North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance countries".

A USA airstrike that led to several civilian casualties in Afghanistan was the result of a missile malfunction. Mattis noted that the attacks were a crime and that the Taliban had no respect for the people of Afghanistan.

In reply, Afghan Special Forces counterattacked a trio of bombers, who holed themselves up in a nearby building. During that trip, Indian Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman vowed to cooperate more with the Afghans but ruled out sending Indian troops to Afghanistan.

This is Mattis's first trip to Afghanistan since the Trump administration announced its new strategy and an increase of more than 3,000 US troops there.

It said USA forces conducted an airstrike in support of an Afghan unit acting to end the assault.

More than 3,000 additional troops are poised to join them as part of Trump's strategy.

Since global forces ended combat operations at the end of 2014 and switched to a train, advise and assist role, security has worsened in Afghanistan.

"We know the cost of staying in Afghanistan, but the cost of leaving would be higher", Stoltenberg later emphasized.
