  • Netflix reaches an agreement with Canada to produce original films and television shows there the government says

"Today's announcement affirms there's more to come as Netflix launches Netflix Canada, our permanent production presence in Canada".

The Wall Street Journal noted that before the announcement of its investment, Netflix commissioned a year ago "hundreds of millions of dollars" of original Canadian programming, making the country one of the top three locations for original productions after the U.S. and United Kingdom, according to a letter from the streaming service's Washington-based lobbyists.

YouTube recently created a channel for Canadian content, while Netflix and the Canadian Broadcasting Association have worked together before. Content in both English and French will be developed.

The government's deal with Netflix under the Investment Act allows it to claim a victory for Canadian content while also avoiding imposing new regulations on Internet companies.

Of course, Netflix has already been doing biz in Canada.

One thing Canadian media companies aren't too pleased about is the omission of a "Netflix tax" in the updated policy. No figure is available, but Joly says top-ups from Ottawa will start next year to cover the shortfall.

Other commentators have pointed out Netflix has previously claimed to spend "hundreds of millions" of Canadian dollars on local productions.

Launching the initiative, Melanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, said that there had been a shift in how people access content, with this increasingly taking place online.

"It looks like Netflix's submission [to Canada's cultural policy consultation] was swallowed whole and presented as something new, when it isn't", argued television critic John Doyle in a piece for Canadian news site The Globe and Mail.

Mélanie Joly, the minister of Canadian heritage, said: "The Government of Canada is committed to growing our creative industries with new investments that create opportunities for creators and producers across the country to make great content that stands out".

Ensuring that Canadians and Netflix members around the world find Canadian films and television shows on the Netflix Service by highlighting and promoting those productions on its global platform.
