  • United States stance on Bombardier dispute is damaging diplomatic relations, says May

The recent ruling by the U.S. Department of Commerce slapping a 219% duty on all airplanes sold by Bombardier, Inc. Nor would he disclose the contingencies it will offer Delta Air Lines, which is slated to begin receiving CS100s next spring. Delta has been preparing to take delivery of the jets in the spring, and was expected to allow pilots to bid on flying assignments in the coming months. They could also still be dropped or refunded.

The tariff decision by the U.S. International Trade Commission effectively closes the huge U.S. market to the CSeries, according to Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, risking the project's viability.

"Pleased she gave commitment to work with me to secure Belfast jobs", the Democratic Unionist Party's (DUP) Arlene Foster, who earlier vowed to use her influence over the government in the dispute, said on Twitter. "Rather, it has everything to do with maintaining a level playing field and ensuring that aerospace companies abide by trade agreements". The Commerce department is scheduled to issue its final ruling in the case on December 12.

Boeing had been asking for an 80% duty.

It called the magnitude of the United States duty "absurd and divorced from the reality about the financing of multibillion-dollar aircraft programmes".

DUP leader Arlene Foster's influence has seen the Prime Minister lobbying US President Donald Trump during a recent visit to NY.

British Prime Minister Theresa May's office stated that the United Kingdom was bitterly disappointed by the result - which comes as no surprise, given that Bombardier's plant in Belfast builds wings for the company's next generation C Series and its closure could hurt her political position.

Ottawa had planned to buy 18 Super Hornets from Boeing to fill what they claim is a critical shortage of fighter jets, but have since threatened to go elsewhere over the Bombardier dispute.

"The government will continue to work with the company to protect vital jobs for Northern Ireland", she said on Twitter.

"I think the Department of Commerce and Boeing have not exactly endeared themselves with a rational and sensible approach here".

That finding is scheduled on October 4, but could be delayed.

A week before Tuesday's decision, Bombardier released a sharply worded statement titled "Boeing's hypocrisy", linking to a Seattle Times article that detailed how Boeing has sold the 787 Dreamliner at a loss for years, in the hope that it eventually will make up the difference in future sales.

Prime Minister Theresa May said that Downing Street's long-term partnership with Boeing was at risk because of its behaviour.

The Chicago-based aircraft maker asked the Commerce Department and the US International Trade Commission to investigate what it called "predatory pricing". Canada could also file a complaint with the World Trade Organization.

"This is clearly aimed at eliminating Bombardier's C Series aircraft from the USA market". Delta [airlines] wants to bring this remarkable new aircraft to the United States flying public.

"Not a bolt, not a part, not a Boeing plane entering Canada as long as this conflict is not solved in a satisfactory way, " Couillard said at a news conference in Quebec City.
