Twitter tests doubling of 140-character limit

  • Twitter tests doubling the length of tweets to 280 characters

In an attempt to improve the service it also removed character limits from Direct Messages sent privately between users and stopped counting images and other media attached to tweets as part of the character limit.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is obviously one of the folks who gets to test drive the new limit.

Twitter has revealed plans to expand its iconic 140 character limit and double it to 280 characters. The company shared data that indicated 9% of all English language tweets ran right up to that 140-character limit, while only 0.4% of Japanese tweets hit that wall. The average Japanese Tweet is 15 characters long, while the English figure is 34. This suggests that users likely feel that they must edit their commentary or thoughts down in order to get their message across.

Twitter product manager Aliza Rosen wrote, "Trying to cram your thoughts into a Tweet - we've all been there, and it's a pain".

Unsurprisingly, Twitter users aren't warming to the experiment.

Twitter has now recognized that and has begun testing a new 280 character limit within a small group, so you may eventually be able to tweet your hot takes with even more heat.

The feature is now available to a small group of people out of the 328 million users Twitter has and may be open to all soon.

The upgrade to 280 characters will be first available to a small group of people, the company said, adding it will collect data and gather feedback until it is launched for all users.

So it may be a while before Twitter officially introduces the new character limit for tweets.

It looks like 140 character tweets might become a thing of the past.

A lot of users have been Tweeting for years, and Twitter understands that there may be an emotional attachment to the 140 character limit.
