Donald Trump and many have claimed that the NFL's ratings are down because of league-wide protests during the national anthem. It was also up over 2015 (the Packers-Chiefs drew an 8.9 overnight) and 2014 (the Bears-Jets drew a 9.2 rating). Of course, in a league and at a time when ratings are down double-digits from a year ago, any up will call for balloons and ice cream.

To come up with overnight ratings, Nielsen takes the percentage of households watching in 56 US markets and comes up with an overnight average - so an 11.6, for instance, means that 11.6% of households in those 54 markets tuned into the game on NBC on Sunday night.

While the ratings service ComScore can not measure overnight ratings, numbers from week one of the National Football League season are in.

Sunday night's game between the Washington Redskins and the Oakland Raiders scored an 11.6/20, meaning that an estimated 11.6 percent of all metered-market households watched the game and an estimated 20 percent of homes using a television at the time watched, Deadline reports.

Trump and others have professed that the NFL's ratings are down due to players kneeling, sitting or raising their fist during the national anthem.

Earlier in the week, "Thursday Night Football" saw a ratings surge with Los Angeles Rams-San Fransisco 49ers on NFL Network drawing a 4.4 final household rating, up 38% from week three, and 7.4 million total viewers, up 47% from last week. CBS' "The NFL Today" had its traditional opening, "highlighting the CBS games of the week before an initial seven-minute discussion on Trump's comments".

Overnight ratings can give a glimpse of which way viewership is going, but don't always tell the whole story. "Ratings for NFL football are way down except before game starts, when people tune in to see whether or not our country will be disrespected!" It had an 11.6 rating compared to last year's 12.9, and a 20 percent share, compared to 21 percent.

The biggest factor in the weekly increase was the Monday Night Football game between the Cowboys and Cardinals.

Generally, TV networks don't even bother showing the national anthem when it is played before the game. CBS' string of shared Thursday Night Football games starts September 28 after several weekends of smaller performances airing exclusively on the NFL Network.
