US Violent Crime Spikes for 2nd Consecutive Year

  • Image Police investigate the scene of a shooting in Chicago on Jan. 1 2017. The shooting of two people brought the number of people shot in Chicago to 4000 people in 2016- one of the most violent years in the city in two decades

The FBI's release of the figures comes as the Trump administration has warned ominously of a unsafe crime wave.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been insisting that last year's crime increase was not a blip. There were 21 murders in South Dakota a year ago; down from 27 in 2015.

Overall violent crimes in CT including murders, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults increased 2.3 percent to 8,123 in 2016. "Over half of the drop in prison populations nationwide since 2010 has just happened in California, and in California, while they're home to 12 percent of the population, they only contributed to 5 percent of the murders this year".

"The data debunk claims from the Trump administration that crime is out of control, but do highlight cities where violence is concerning", Inimai Chettiar, director of the Brennan Center's Justice Program, said in a statement. The Northeast saw the lowest crime rates of any region in the country in 2016, and CT had the fifth lowest violent crime rate in the nation in 2016.

"Chicago saw about a 50-percent increase in its homicide rate previous year", he said.

The violent crime category includes murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

An analysis by the the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law found that overall crime had dropped due to sustained declines in property-related offenses, but murder increases were driven by violence in numerous country's 30-largest cities.

"I think what we're doing very is really tapping into our partners, both on the law enforcement side and the community", Clements said.

Sessions said the country needed to "dismantle criminal organizations and gangs, stop the scourge of drug trafficking, and send a strong message to criminals that we will not surrender our communities to lawlessness and violence".

New FBI statistics show MI had an increase in violent crime more than double the national average.

Number of Chicago crime reports by date, 2001-17. "So in other words", Pfaff said, "five neighborhoods in Chicago explain 10 percent of the national increase in homicide rates".

The group's data included cities with dramatic increases, such as Chicago, which had 762 homicides in 2016, up from 482 homicides a year earlier; Phoenix, which saw 146 homicides, up from 113 the year before; and Louisville, which had 117 homicides, up from 80 in 2015. And the data says homicides climbed 8.6 percent.

The total number of violent crimes reported, 1,588, is the second-lowest reported in the last 30 years.

Since the early 1990s, as the U.S. population has grown, murders have dropped to about 14,000 a year.

Even with last year's spike, however, Chicago's homicide rate is not at record-high levels. A few thousand law enforcement jurisdictions do not report their data to federal authorities each year.
