  • Narendra Modi's 67th birthday today PM to inaugurate Sardar Sarovar Dam address two rallies

While a 182- metre Statue of Unity is a project conceived by Modi, he has also been consistently in favour of increasing the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam. We brought Narmada waters to the border areas for the jawans, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Sardar Sarovar Dam Sunday on River Narmada in Gujarat. The prime minister remembered two great people, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. B. Ambedkar, who as minister gave great importance to irrigation and waterways. The water from Narmada will flow into over 9,000 villages through a canal network.

"When the World Bank had refused to help build Sardar Sarovar dam, the saints and seers of Gujarat donated money to make it possible, he added". The project has been ensnared in controversies ever since its foundation stone was laid in 1961 by the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It is an emotional moment for me.

Addressing a gathering after the inauguration, Modi said, "Let us leave no stone unturned in creating a "New India" by 2022, when we mark 75 years of India's freedom". Earlier in the day, like every year after becoming the PM, Modi drove to his younger brother Pankaj Modi's residence on the outskirts of Gandhinagar and took blessings of his mother Hiraba (97). "It should be part of the curriculum of engineering studies in the country".

With increased height up to 138.68 metres, the water storage capacity of the dam has now reached to 4.73 million acre feet (MAF).

Officials say that the amount of power generated can light up three states - Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam, on the Narmada River, is the world's second largest dam after the Grand Coulee Dam in the United States.

The length of the dam is 1.2 km and it is 163 metres deep.

The Sardar Sarovar dam is meant to provide drinking water to 131 urban centres and 9,633 villages (53 per cent of total 18,144 villages of Gujarat) and irrigation facilities for 18.54 hectares of land covering 3,112 villages under 73 talukas in 15 districts. Majority of the work related to Narmada project was completed during the years that our party was in power , As Reported By DNAIndia.

Under the project, the four crore people of Gujarat will get access to drinking water, and farmers will greatly benefit from the irrigation of nearly 22 lakh acres of land, claimed Gadkari.
