A detective who interviewed a 12-year-old girl stabbed repeatedly in a Wisconsin park in 2014 has testified that one of two classmates accused of attacking her had been scaring her with stories about the fictional horror character Slender Man before the attack.
It came after a week's testimony over Weier's mental state at the time she and a friend, Morgan Geyser, stabbed a classmate in what they said was an effort to please the fictional horror character known as Slender Man.
After nearly three more hours the jury emerged with the verdict which, per Weier's plea agreement means she will be placed in a mental institution until at least 2020, WDJT reported.
Geyser has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease to being a party to first-degree attempted intentional homicide. Her trial is set to begin on October 9.
For the first time, a detective Wednesday shared the victim's account of what happened the day two Waukesha girls stabbed their friend almost to death.
Judge orders Anissa Weier committed to a mental health institution.
The pair admitted to their roles in the attack but claimed they acted as "proxies" of Slender Man a mythical character peprpetuate don the dark web.
She was asked by Weier's lawyer why she did not recognize that the belief in Slender Man and his powers to kill them or their families was a delusion. Leutner managed to crawl to the side of a road where a cyclist found her. She added that Geyser is schizophrenic and Weier clung to her because she was lonely and depressed. Van Rybroek is the second court-appointed expert to evaluate Weier's insanity plea.
Weier said she had second thoughts when she and Geyser began their 300-mile walk to Slender Man's supposed mansion in Nicolet National Forest, but Geyser encouraged her to continue by saying she'd made a deal with Slender Man that would result in the deaths of their families if the girls didn't join him.
Because the jury found Weier mentally ill, she is considered not responsible for her actions in the attack.
Defence attorney Joseph Smith Jr yesterday told Waukesha County Court: "Anissa's broken mind caused her to lose touch with reality". Leutner told Fisher her mother tried to assure her it was all fiction, but she also told the detective that she still was uncertain and wanted to believe Geyser even after she stabbed her, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
Weier shouldn't go to prison, the legal team insisted.
