FTC Investigates Massive, Troubling Equifax Data Breach

  • Step 3 in Equifax's unfreeze process

Credit monitoring agency Equifax says names, social security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and even driver's license numbers of about 143 million Americans were exposed in the breach they discovered July 29.

Colorado's attorney general is warning consumers that the Equifax data breach is "very serious" and urged people to take some basic steps to protect their personal information.

Anyone in the USA who has a bank account or who ever had a vehicle loan or mortgage is likely affected by the Equifax hack, and sensitive information such as name, address, Social Security number and driver's license number may have been exposed to hackers.

The Equifax breach has generated intense scrutiny of the company and could spark more regulations to protect Americans' personal data, the White House said Monday. If so, as the company reported last week, your social security number and other identifying information have been stolen. Typically, when data breaches happen hackers wait a while until they start making transactions with your information.

- Contact one of the three credit reporting bureaus to notify them that you may be a victim of identity theft and would like to place a fraud alert on your credit. To find out if you been impacted visit the website: equifax security 2017 dot com.

A credit freeze, which is also called a security freeze, locks down your credit and can only be lifted with a personal identification number (PIN) that you receive when you enroll.

Their businesses are based on getting customer data from banks, which allows them to track things like whether you've been paying your mortgage, your credit card or auto loan.

If you have been affected, Better Business Bureau first recommends taking advantage of the one year of free credit monitoring service offered by Equifax.

-Keep a close eye on your credit cards, bank statements and credit report.

Peterson said his office is committed to ensuring that Equifax complies with all applicable state laws. This is going to last way longer than that, so your next step is you add a free fraud alert to any of the big major companies.

A lot of people are choosing to "freeze" their credit report. Make sure that you are signing up for the free service and not Equifax's paid service by mistake. But if you are really anxious about your credit being misused, this works.
