Hodgson was quickly made aware of the size of the task facing him as Palace boss when Davis scored the only goal of the game after six minutes.

Speaking to reporters on Friday for the first time since being named as sacked Frank de Boer's replacement on Tuesday, Hodgson said he had no doubt he could turn around Palace's fortunes.

When Roy Hodgson said "I don't really know what I am doing here" the morning after his resignation had followed England's shameful 2-1 Euro 2016 round-of-16 defeat to Iceland in Nice, it crystallised befuddled tournament performances in France previous year and at the 2014 World Cup, where Hodgson's team did not even make it out of the group stage.

"Matches do get lost when you're a football coach, particularly in tournament football and the tournament is over", said Hodgson.

Key personnel Christian Benteke, Mamadou Sakho and Luka Milivojevic were all present during the session as they look to make a positive start under their new manager.

In the last five head to head records between these two teams in English Carabao Cup, English Premier League, and English FA Cup, Southampton won three matches and two matches by Crystal Palace.

'It was good, I enjoyed it, it was excellent, ' Hodgson told Sky Sports News of his first training session in charge at Palace.

After Everton's insipid and passionless performance in the Europa League on Thursday, Ronald Koeman spoke of fear preventing gifted players from expressing themselves and it feels like something very similar is happening at Crystal Palace.

Asked whether it would be his last job in management, Hodgson said: "I'll let time and results be the judge of that".

As the game entered its closing stages, Southampton's Mario Lemina nearly created enough space for himself to shoot as the visitors sought the second goal that would seal the points, but was crowded out. This is a team that is better on paper and they are also in better form so it is hard to see them not win this game, even though it is away from home.

Hodgson on his return to the dugout: "I am really pleased to be back".

"We're four games in and the start has been a poor one, we can't deny that, but there's 38 games in the league season and there's 34 more to play and quite frankly the relegation issues are not going to be decided this side of Christmas, they're probably not going to be decided this side of Easter".

There were boos from the Palace crowd when Hodgson brought off Loftus-Cheek, his best player, for Bakary Sako with 15 minutes to go and the change did not work for his goal-shy team.
