The Director General of the J&K Police, S.P. Vaid said "We had prior information about the presence of two foreign", he also said that Ismail was responsible for the Amarnath Yatra attacks.

Incidentally, while social media was abuzz about Islam's anointment to the senior LeT post, intelligence operatives said there were no independent inputs with them yet to confirm this.

The security forces in J & K have received great success today.

"LeT terrorist Abu Ismail of Pakistan along with his accomplice killed in Nowgam".

"As the security forces tightened the cordon, the hiding militants opened fire, triggering an encounter", an official said.

Ismail had taken over the command of LeT after the elimination of Abu Dujana on August 1. Prohibitory orders were clamped in areas coming under the police stations of Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta, MR Gunj and Safa Kadal following the killing of two Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists. Seven Amarnath pilgrims were killed including six women and injuring 19 others in southern Anantnag district in the tragic incident.

Eight people were killed when terrorists fired at a bus carrying pilgrims from Gujarat and Maharashtra on July 10. "We will continue these kinds of operations to neutralise the remnant people which should bring some peace and clam in the valley", said Major General Raju.

"The mastermind has been killed but two militants, one a foreigner, are at large", Khan said.

It was reported that a manhunt had been launched to hunt down Ismail, a Pakistani national, following the attack on Amarnath Yatra pilgrims in July. He said Ismail was involved in the killing of 15 security personnel in the area.

"We are going after the militant leadership as eliminating the leadership is important. Our targets are only those who aid and assist India in crushing this freedom struggle", Askari said.

Ismail according to police was among the most wanted militants active in the restive region.
