A man with a knife was immediately arrested after attacking a soldier at the Chatelet subway station in central Paris at about 6:30 a.m. Friday morning. No one was hurt.

In Paris, a knife-wielding man attacked police while shouting "Allah Akbar", while in Burgundy a hammer-wielding man attacked two women in a park while shouting ISIS slogans.

It is the latest in a long string of attacks on service personnel involved in Operation Sentinelle - an initiative involving 10,000 soldiers and 4700 gendarmes and police. The goal of the operation is to protect the country's sensitive facilities from terrorism.

The operation has been widely criticized, some consider it ineffective, or even a target of Islamist attacks, but reassuring for the population according to others. The man was disarmed and immobilised by the soldier, who was not injured.

The soldier was with the Sentinelle force assigned to protect prominent sites after deadly Islamic extremist attacks in recent years.

The soldier was unhurt in the incident. The assailant had also threatened passersby before targeting the three police officers, according to BFM TV.

Defence minister Florence Parly said on Europe-1 radio that the attack confirms government strategy to make the force "more unpredictable. for potential attackers".

France declared a state of emergency following attacks in Paris in November 2015, in which more than 130 people were killed.
