  • Hurricane Irma: What Trump Org says about Mar-a-Lago, Florida golf courses

But referring to those who did perish in the storm as "such a small number" is more than a little callous, and probably something you would have never heard any of his predecessors say, considering they knew how to speak.

Trump said that storms were bigger in the 1930s and 1940s.

So far - as with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey - efforts by the Federal Emergency Management Agency are getting good reviews from on the ground in Florida.

"It's clear that the entire country is standing with Florida as Hurricane Irma batters our state right now", Gov. Scott said in a statement.

Hurricane Irma slowed to a Category Two storm after making its second landfall in Florida on Sunday, US forecasters said, warning it still had "dangerous" winds causing "life-threatening" storm surges, AFP reports.

Current federal law caps that aid at $1 million in total (not per person); the House and Senate both approved a plan on Monday that would increase the available amount of money to $25 million.

This is Trump's third visit in less than three weeks to a hurricane-damaged state. Vice President Mike Pence, who traveled separately to Florida, handed out food alongside the president and first lady.

Trump returned to Texas and stopped in Louisiana on September 2 where he visited a shelter and spoke with some of those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

This time, Trump made sure to connect with a community in recovery.

Other areas of the state, however, remain largely incapacitated, including the Florida Keys, where an estimated quarter of the homes were destroyed.

"Historically there's never been anything like this, but the U.S. Coast Guard, FEMA, working with Gov. Scott, they've really done an incredible job, power is turning on rapidly", said Mr. Trump.

In the city of Hollywood, north of Miami, police are investigating the deaths of eight nursing home residents.

FEMA also said it had moved 3.8 million meals and 3.4 million liters of water to states in the Southeast that were affected by the storm.
