  • The tragedy occurred at the crater of Solfatara di Pozzuoli near Naples

Firefighters and police officers stood by an ambulance on the site where three people reportedly died when they fell into a crater in a steamy volcanic field in Pozzuoli, near Naples, Italy, today.

Details are sketchy, but the Daily Mail reported that Italian tourist Massimiliano Carrer, 45, attempted to save his son, Lorenzo, and fell into the crater when the ground gave way.

His wife, Tiziana Zaramella, 42, went to help them but again the crater collapsed and she was killed by the fumes. Authorities believe they died from inhaling gas fumes.

An 11-year-old boy and his parents have died after falling into the crater of a volcano in Italy.

According to the Italian fire brigade officers, the three dead bodies were pulled from a shallow hole in a section of the crater at the Solfatara volcano, which was cordoned off by a wooden fence meant to keep tourists out of the danger area.

The youngest member of their family, however, a 7-year-old managed to survive.

Eye-witness Diego Vitagliano told R.it Naples: 'I saw a child run crying, I did not think I was facing the worst tragedy of my life.

Formed 4000 years ago, the volcano last erupted in 1198. "In the 40 years that I've worked here, I've never seen anything like it". "When the two combine, they form an overwhelming cloud of sulfuric acid, which can render a person unconscious within mere moments". "I express the full support of the community of Pozzuoli to the families of the victims".

The ancient volcanoes are frequented by Italian school children and tourists from around the world.

Volcanologist Giuseppe Mastrolorenzo suggested that intense rainfall in recent days could have played a role in the deaths by causing deep openings in the volcanic field's surface.
