Calling it a "golden opportunity", a "win win win situation for Paris, Los Angeles and the IOC", President Thomas Bach drew applause from the IOC membership when he announced that all sides had agreed to the Tripartite Agreement that made the award for 2024 and 2028 possible.

International Olympic Committee celebrations in Lima, Peru, and in France as Paris is confirmed as the 2024 Games host.

It sees the Games return to the USA for the first time since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and marks the third occasion in which Los Angeles has hosted (1932, 1984). "With the support, enthusiasm and passion of their citizens and athletes, Los Angeles and Paris have presented the best of their cities", IOC Member and Evaluation Commission Chair Patrick Baumann said in the report.

Past Olympic hosts had seven years to prepare from when they were awarded the Games to their staging, compared to LA's 11.

The last time two Olympic hosts were determined at once was in 1921, when the 1924 Paris and 1928 Amsterdam Games were awarded, according to

Paris is set take its place alongside London as the only three-time hosts of the Summer Games in 2024.

Tokyo's 2020 plan has already doubled to $12.6 billion, Rio de Janeiro is still struggling to pay off the debt from its $13 billion hosting duties in 2016, and the 2014 Games in Sochi ballooned from a budget of $12 billion to around $50 billion.

It is the first time the International Olympic Committee has awarded a Games 11 years in advance.

And Eric Garcetti, the Mayor of Los Angeles, added: "Bringing the Olympics back home to LA gives us the chance to imagine what our city will look like a decade from now". It's the third time each city will host the Olympics.

The Los Angeles planning committee estimates that the games will cost $5.3 billion.

The U.S. ends its longest drought between hosting an Olympics since the 28-year gap between 1932 and 1960. Numerous plans for 2028 are the same as they would have been if they were awarded for 2024.

Paris was a finalist for 1992, 2008 and 2012. "The phenomenally talented LA28 team has worked tirelessly for more than three years to deliver on our promise to create a new Games for a new era".
