  • Death toll in Mexico quake rises to 58

At least 58 people were killed Friday, when a powerful 8.2-magnitude natural disaster struck southern Mexico, authorities said.

Tsunami warning has been issued for Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica.

A massive quake struck the southwestern coast of Mexico Thursday evening, local time, leaving at least 15 people dead in the states of Chiapas and Tabasco.

Reports suggest there had been waves of up to one metre in some areas of Mexico following the natural disaster.

The president of Mexico Enrique Pena Nieto says the quake is the strongest the country has seen in a century.

More than 260 aftershocks occurred after the initial quake, Mexico President Enrique Peña Nieto said Friday. The quake triggered a tsunami, bringing one-meter waves to the Mexican coast.

The quake was felt in Mexico City, sending residents to the streets out of fears that buildings would collapse. Tremors were felt hundreds of miles away, and reportedly lasted for up to a minute in Mexico City.

According to the US Geological Survey, a number of aftershocks have been reported, including six that measured above 5.0 in magnitude.

Two children were reported dead by The Associated Press in Tabasco, the state just north of Chiapas. In Juchitan, a town located in Oaxaca state, 17 people have died and standing structures have been diminished to nothing but debris. Widespread, hazardous tsunami waves were possible, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

Education Secretary Aurelio Nuño Mayer announced that classes had been suspended in 11 of the country's 31 states and in Mexico City to assess the damage at schools.

"We have reports of some damage and the death of one person, even though we still don't have details", Morales said.

Mexico is also now under threat from Hurricane Katia along its eastern coast.
