  • Trump Jr. to testify in Senate, Manafort lawyer subpoenaed: CNN

Donald Trump Jr., a man whose breathtaking displays of incompetence constitute perhaps the strongest evidence yet for the old aphorism about the apple's proximity to the tree, sat down for a closed-door interview with Senate Judiciary Committee investigators this morning to discuss last summer's meeting with a purported Russian agent who had promised him mysterious, damaging information about then-candidate Hillary Clinton.

In the statement, the president's eldest son said he took that June 9, 2016, meeting with the Russian lawyer because he wanted to determine Clinton's "fitness" as a candidate.

Congressional committees investigating Russia's alleged efforts to sway last year's USA presidential election in Trump's favor have sought to learn whether members of the Trump team conspired with Russian Federation.

Donald Trump Jr. gives a television interview at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio U.S. July 19, 2016.

The written statement concludes by saying, "As is clear from the above, I did not collude with any foreign government and do not know of anyone who did".

Donald Trump Jr., in a prepared statement to Senate Judiciary Committee investigators, said it was important to learn about Clinton's "fitness" to be president, the paper said. Emails released in July show that Trump Jr. was told the session at Trump Tower in NY was part of a Russian government effort to aid his father, the Republican nominee.

"We want to do this in a thorough way that gets the most information possible", Warner said.

A lawyer for the Agalarovs has denied that developer Aras Agalarov ever claimed to have damaging information about Clinton, as Goldstone had written to Trump Jr.

Trump's testimony emphasized again the innocence of the meeting, set up on a chaotic day in the heat of the campaign.

Trump Jr. also is expected to appear before the Senate intelligence committee at some point.

Although Mueller's team apparently received permission to view documents that Manafort submitted to the committee, those records have not yet been turned over.

Trump Jr.'s public defense of the meeting has changed over time, at first saying the sit-down was organized to address the adoption of Russian children and the Magnitsky Act, which directs sanctions against Russia over human rights violations. Emails show the meeting was described to Trump Jr.as part of a Russian government effort to aid the Trump campaign. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., exiting the meeting to attend a vote.

"The meeting provided no meaningful information and turned out not to be about what had been represented", Trump Jr. said in his statement, according to the Times.

"Nonetheless, at the time, I thought I should listen to what Rob and his colleagues had to say", Trump Jr. said in his statement, referring to Rob Goldstone, a music publicist acquaintance of Trump's.

Representative Adam Schiff of California, the top House intelligence panel Democrat, said he agrees that new information will extend his panel's probe as well.
