The governor of the southern U.S. state of Georgia on Thursday ordered the mandatory evacuation of the city of Savannah and other coastal areas ahead of Hurricane Irma.

Residents cleared out store shelves, grabbing the essentials as they prepared for the worst in cities like Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina.

In a statement, the Governor's Office said Deal was acting on a recommendation from the state's Emergency Operations Command. "This state of emergency also ensures aid for the six counties potentially impacted by this catastrophic storm".
