Irma, which was the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded north of the Caribbean and east of the Gulf of Mexico, passed nearly directly over the island of Barbuda, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

As of Wednesday evening, the National Hurricane Center is forecasting that the centerline of the Category 5 storm will travel over Miami, then up the east coast of Florida.

Hurricane Katia continued moving Thursday morning in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm is now over 1,200 miles away from these islands.

Irma skirted Puerto Rico and left 1 million people without electricity.

For comparison, Hurricane Harvey unloaded over 50 inches of rain east of Houston, Texas last week.

Philip Klotzbach, a specialist hurricane forecaster for CSU, tweeted: "'The Atlantic now has three hurricanes active at the same time: "#Irma, #Jose and #Katia.

Katia is located about 200 miles east of Tampico, Mexico.

CNN's Leyla Santiago, in the capital of San Juan, said there were already power outages as strong winds lashed the island and the center of the storm moved just off the northeast coast.

That string of islands was slammed by Irma Wednesday and the extent of the damage is not yet clear.

As of 10 a.m. AST Thursday, Katia had maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour and was stationary, according to NOAA.

It was heading to the west-northwest at 18 miles per hour (20 kph) The Hurricane Center says a hurricane watch is in effect for Antigua and Barbuda, which is already trying to recover from Category 5 Irma.

The storm is forecast to begin moving slightly faster in a west-northwest motion during the next two days, according to the NHC. Antigua has issued a hurricane watch for the islands of Antigua and Barbuda.

In addition to the mix of three hurricanes, the HWN has been hassled by a series of solar flares - one a massive Class X-9.3, said to be the most powerful flare in more than a decade.
