Princess Mako also told press outlets that she has always known that she would eventually abandon her royal status, thanks to a Japanese law that requires women in the royal family to give up their titles when they marry commoners.

The eldest daughter of Japanese Emperor Akihito officially confirmed her engagement in a a press conference on the Akasaka Estate in Toyko on Sunday.

Publicly addressing her engagement for the first time, the 25-year-old said she was first drawn to Komuro's "bright smiles like the sun", and has come to learn he is "a honest, strong-minded, hard worker" with "a big heart".

Princess Mako and her father Prince Akishino during a royal visit to Hungary this year.

The Imperial Household said that Komuro was a student at the International Christian University in Tokyo, which Princess Mako also attended. During the program, Komuro went to the University of California in Los Angeles, while Princess Mako studied at the University of Edinburgh.

Mr Komuro is studying business law and works at a law firm. But the report about the engagement and Princess Mako renouncing her royal status did not make headlines right away until earlier this year. However, the formal announcement of Princess Mako's engagement is expected to reignite discussion of the matter-if only to prevent the end of the imperial line. The couple started dating even before they went overseas and continued their communication after.

In December 2013, Komuro proposed to Mako after returning to Japan. Komuro responded, "Princess Mako quietly looks over me like the moon".

Mako's renouncement of royal status will make her the 8th member of the Imperial family to renounce status in order to marry since World War II.

The announcement was originally expected in July, but it was later postponed after a rain disaster hit western Japan. The law does not apply to male members of the royal family.

Komuro, the young perspective lawyer, added he sincerely recognizes that grave responsibility that he bears - the marriage with the princess is the great honour and privilege. His eldest son Crown Prince Naruhito would assume the throne.
