60000 people leave homes in Frankfurt ahead of WW II bomb defusal

  • Huge WWII-era bomb successfully defused in Frankfurt

About 20,000 people were evacuated from the western city of Koblenz before specialists disarmed a 500-kilogram USA bomb Saturday.

German explosives experts have defused a massive World War Two bomb in the financial capital of Frankfurt after tens of thousands of people evacuated their homes.

Helicopters with heat-sensing cameras circled to spot stragglers and police chiefs said they would use force if necessary to clear the area, warning that an uncontrolled explosion would be big enough to flatten a city block.

As well as residents, more than 100 hospital patients from Frankfurt and Koblenz, including premature infants and those in intensive care, have also had to be moved to safety.

Bomb technicians had been scheduled to begin work shortly after noon local time, but the fire department said there were delays as some people refused to leave.

The brigade's director, Reinhard Ries, told reporters: "The scale of this bomb is overwhelming".

Shelters have been set up for residents who are unable to go to friends or family during the bomb operation, with food provided.

World War II may have ended over 70 years ago, but its legacy still lingers in cities across Germany.

More than 60,000 people have been ordered to leave a radius of 1.5 kilometers - almost a mile - around the site where the 1.8-ton British bomb will be disposed of Sunday.

On Christmas Day 2016, another 50,000 were evacuated from Augsburg in south Germany after a 1.8-ton bomb was found beneath an underground parking garage.
