  • VIDEO: Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper suffers ugly-looking knee injury

Harper, the 2015 National League MVP, is now tied for the Major League lead with 14 two-strike home runs this season and leads the MLB with 12 first-inning longballs. Boasting a 14.5 game lead in the NL East, Washington can afford to take it slow with Harper from here on out.

Nationals right-hander Edwin Jackson added: "When you see a calibre of player like that, or any player, go down like that, you hope for the best". With the rainout on Friday and the Giants not returning to Washington D.C.in 2017, Saturday's game was a must for the two teams.

Instead, the Nationals and their fans will bemoan an injury star outfielder Bryce Harper suffered running out a groundball up the first base line.

After slipping on the first base bag, Harper's leg buckled as he went airborne and fell to the ground.

Harper is now one of the leaders in the NL MVP race and is hitting.326 with 29 home runs and 87 RBI.

Harper had to be carried off after not being able to put any weight on the leg.

As per usual with the Washington Nationals, no injury news is usually given until after the game and its unlikely we will know the full diagnosis until some point during the doubleheader tomorrow. On the other side, the Nationals are 5-1 in their last six games overall, are 5-1 in their last six home games, and are 16-6 in their last 22 games versus National League West opponents.

Baker said his first reaction was to think about last September, when catcher Wilson Ramos tore the ACL in his right knee on a noncontact play after a rain delay.

"He was in obvious pain, and he was praying and I was praying, too".

"The good thing is he's young and strong", Baker said. Harper clutched his left knee in agony as trainers came out to assist. The game will be in Woodbridge, Va., against the Salem (Va.) Red Sox, a farm team of Boston.
