A newborn baby has been found safe and well after it was abandoned on a pavement in Texas. According to Harris County deputies, a resident at the Bridges of Cypress Creek apartments complex found the infant at about 5 a.m. covered with ants "from head to toe".

Authorities said they found evidence that the baby was born inside the apartment and then taken outside and placed on the ground.

Albert Peterson told KHOU that he thought the sound was coming from a toy until he looked in the bushes and found a baby girl.

The mother of the baby and another person from the apartment were taken into custody by the deputies, with the mother now undergoing a medical and psychological evaluation. Deputies said the baby was left abandoned on a sidewalk in Spring, right outside the apartment. The baby was taken to Texas Children's Hospital in The Woodlands for treatment.

Peterson told KTRK it wasn't hard for authorities to find her because she was bleeding and had left a trail of bloody footprints on the ground.

Harris County Deputy Thomas Gilliland said to the station: 'Had this neighbor not been here, we'd be looking at a homicide. He told the station that "she was there on the ground in the flower bed with ants".

Police estimated the baby to be about an hour hold when it was discovered.

"It's like they just left the baby out there like it was trash", Baldwin said. Inside they found two people, including a 21-year-old woman who admitted to being the baby's mother, according to KPRC. Baldwin could be heard saying it was insane and that someone had left their newborn baby out there, while telling Peterson to call 911.

The newborn will remain in the hospital's custody until custody proceedings are finished, Child Protective Services on Friday. Investigators tracked down a woman who is believed to be the mother of the baby girl.
